Shattering Feet Dance (1990-1996), was formed by a group of young performers from different cultural and artistic backgrounds. Shattering Feet's approach to creating dances was based upon deepening connection to each other, gaining insight to the differences and similarities within the group. The performers then created dances to heighten the audiences understanding of human relations in our diverse community. The core group of performers provided a supportive environment for the creative development of the individual as an artist. Shattering Feet continually produced performances for the general public at reduced or no admission fees.
Our belief, which we translated to practice, is that art is a part of our everyday lives which can be experienced by everyone, particularly those who face barriers to participation. We provided a supportive environment for youth to learn and implement the techniques of modern dance, creative self-expression, and contact improvisational dance.
Between 1990-1995, Shattering Feet performances were held in accessible theatres, outdoors, in galleries, at visual art events and benefits for other non-profits.
In the latter years of Shattering Feet, Carey Thompson and Rosy Simas, hosted several workshops in Minneapolis, MN taught by Barbara Mahler of the Susan Klein School of dance.
